THE iconic blue lights outside of Taunton police station were always a familiar sight in the town.

But the once-busy station now lies empty, and the lights nowhere to be found.

Officers and staff have vacated the ageing premises in Shuttern and relocated to new offices across town in Taunton Deane Borough Council's Deane House HQ in Belvedere Road.

The listed buildings in Shuttern, which have a 250-year connection with law and order, are now too large for the police base in the county town since most offices and support staff transferred to a custody and investigation centre in Bridgwater in September 2014.

They are also impractical and in need of considerable investment, with some of the premises originally forming part of the town jail in the 1750s.

Somerset County Gazette:

But what has happened to the lights which used to hang outside the building?

Taken by curiosity, your County Gazette has contacted Avon and Somerset Police to ask where they are now.

Luckily, they remain intact, but sadly, there's no plans to bring them back out into the public just yet.

A spokesman for the force said: "They are in storage.

"Their future is currently undetermined, we haven't made any decisions about them yet.

"But they are safe."
