CHARD has been named as one of the cheapest places to buy fuel in the country, according to a new report.

Analysing prices from across the UK over the last month, PetrolPrices has released research that reveals the cheapest 20 towns and cities to buy petrol and diesel.

The lowest price measured was 118.9p per litre, with Chard popping up in the top 20 for diesel prices.

PetrolPrices has been able to determine the local average in each area to identify where the cheapest places are to fill up your tank, with Shildon in County Durham and Ryde in the Isle of Wight topping the list of the cheapest places to buy fuel.

The news comes as RAC research reveals that nationally petrol prices increased by 5p a litre last month.

This is the second highest price rise since 2000, with May 2018 being the highest, and it comes as retailers pass on wholesale price increases to customers after the cost of oil increased by more than $3 a barrel.

The increase is expected to add around £3 to the cost of filling up an average family car.

Kitty Bates, of PetrolPrices.com, said: “Fuel prices can vary massively across the country; it can vary up to 30p per litre between the cheapest station and the most expensive motorway station, so checking for the cheapest or best value station near you, en route or at your destination can save you money.

"We have calculated that our members saved around £200 a year by comparing petrol stations near them with many surprised to discover nearby petrol stations they never even knew existed.”

Chard was the 14th cheapest place to buy diesel. The average price came in at 1.295p per litre, with a town low of 1.289p.
