TWO people have been left with serious injuries after 11 casualties were rushed to hospital from a four car pile-up on the A303.

Emergency service rushed to the scene yesterday (March 31) after reports a serious crash involving four cars.

Now, police are appealing for witnesses as they confirm two of the casualties sustained serious injuries in the collision.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "We’re keen to hear from motorists who were travelling on the A303 yesterday.

"A serious road road traffic collision happened at about 4.25pm between Southfields and South Petherton – four vehicles were involved.

"A Ford Kuga which was travelling in the eastbound lane was in collision with a Vauxhall Astra travelling in the opposite direction.

"The collision happened on the westbound lane near to Ilminster by-pass.

"Two other vehicles were also involved when they tried to avoid the first two vehicles."

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was called to cut four members of the public free from their vehicles.

Fire engines from Martock, Ilminster and Yeovil were sent to the scene, and oxygen therapy was given to one of those injured.

Two casualties were airlifted to hospital.

The police spokesman added: ""There were a total of 11 people taken to hospital.

"Injuries to two women were more serious – one woman was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital with suspected broken ribs.

"Another woman was taken to Southmead Hospital with serious leg and chest injuries, where she remains in a stable condition.

"We’re keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident who may have information to help us piece together what happened.

"We are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen the Ford Kuga before the collision or has dash cam footage of the incident."
