"THERE was all sorts of commotion, people were running around, it was chaos."

These are the words of mum Kelly Wilson, who was on holiday with her 18-month old son, Archibald, at Brean Pontins when an air-conditioning and heating duct collapsed in the holiday park's clubhouse.

Eighteen people were injured, with six taken to hospital on Wednesday (February 20) evening after the collapse, in the clubhouse as families played bingo and children were watching a show.

The 30-year-old mother-of-one, from Peterborough, said she was in her chalet with her son, her friend Cyndi and Cyndi’s two sons, when she saw a number emergency vehicles pull up outside the holiday park.

"We walked out of our chalet to see what was going on as there were a lot of emergency vehicles parking up,” she said.

"I asked one of the staff what was going on and she told me not to worry as they had been called to a woman in labour.

"This didn't seem right to me so we walked up a little bit further and we saw loads of people there.

"There was all sorts of commotion, people running around, it was chaos.

"We were planning to go to the clubhouse that evening and watch a show but we didn't. If we had, we may not have made it out.

"I feel like we had a lucky escape."

Kelly said Pontins staff told her to return to her chalet as the incident unfolded and said someone would be round to do a head count that evening.

However, the mother-of-one claims staff did not come to her chalet to check on her at all during the night and staff were not apologetic when she went to complain about it the next day (February 21).

"They should have had better emergency procedures in place, no one was very helpful and there were just not enough procedures in place,” she said.

"I felt quite on edge this morning so we left the chalet a day early and cut our holiday short.

"We just could not bear to stay there, I just didn't like the idea of the kids staying somewhere so dangerous.

"I went to speak to some of the staff earlier to complain and they were not helpful at all. They said I would have to send an email to complain. It’s disgraceful.

"I can just imagine it must have been mass panic out there."

Kelly said she thinks the holiday park should be closed down after the incident - and is pleased Sedgemoor District Council has launched an investigation.

She said: "I think Brean Pontins needs to close down, the facilities are not well kept.

"I couldn't walk anywhere in my chalet without it being damp, I couldn't put anything down.

"It needs to close as I don't want this to happen to anyone else."

The Weekly News has contacted Pontins for comment.
