PLANS to build a cycle path which runs from Taunton to Wellington are on track.

Two dedicated cycling groups will soon be commissioning a feasibility study to find out the possibility providing the path.

The feasibility study has been made possible after £3,360 of council funding was given, half from Taunton Deane Borough Council and Wellington Town Council.

Taunton Area Cycling Campaign has been working with the Wellington Wheelers to created a safer and practical cycling route between the two towns.

TACC held its own survey in 2016 which highlighted 15 key 'hotspots' for cycling in Taunton.

High on the list of priorities identified was a cycling route between Taunton and Wellington.

Mike Ginger, of TACC, said: "We asked over 300 cyclists in 2018 what their priorities would be if there was funding for new cycling infrastructure, and a safe route between Wellington and Taunton came out as second favourite.

"We are therefore really pleased that Wellington Town Council and Taunton Deane Borough Council have agreed to share the cost of a feasibility study.

"With this we move the aspiration for a safe route into a tangible proposal. This is a key step before it would be possible to seek legal permissions and funding.

"We are also working with Somerset County Council and Taunton Deane Council on the development of a 'Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan' for Taunton which will look at a network of local routes in details.

"This work is supported by the Department for Transport."

Currently, cyclists are left to face the A38, a road which features a handful of 'dangerous' bends, with just a narrow pavement running adjacent to the road.

ACTION: Keen cyclists gathered to promote better routes in Taunton Deane

Charles Biscoe, an officer at Wellington Wheelers, said: "We have been working with TACC to have the survey done.

"We are quite a bid cycling club.

"We decided to look to see if it was possible.

"The population is growing, and we want to promote cycling, for mental and physical health.

"There's a lot of cash flowing around to do it, but not until there's a feasible plan.

"We are looking at the A38 and two other routes.

"This is taking the first step to get it done.

"Then you wouldn't worry about cycling that way."
