DRIVERS are being warned of disruption as emergency work takes place to repair a gas leak - closing a major Bridgwater route in one direction.

Wales & West Utilities has confirmed the work to repair the leak, on a pipe running beneath the Broadway Bridge road - and it is unclear how long the repair will take - but means the westbound carriageway of Broadway will be closed, at the junction with Salmon Parade.

Nick Sealey, operational manager for Bridgwater, said: "We are working in the Broadway Bridge area of Bridgwater to repair a leak on a gas pipe running beneath the road.

"In agreement with Somerset County Council and to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe while we work, we will need to close the westbound lane along Broadway at its junction with Salmon Parade.

"This means that there will be no left-hand turn from Salmon Parade onto Broadway. A diversion route will be clearly signposted.

"At the moment we are unable to say how long our work will take. Our engineers are working to resolve this issue as safely and as quickly as possible.

"As these essential works are likely to cause some disruption, we would kindly advise road users to plan ahead and use alternative routes if possible. We appreciate that working on roads such as this is not ideal, but it is important that we fix this leak now, in order to continue to provide a safe and reliable supply of gas to homes and businesses.”
