THE winner of North Petherton's Christmas Lights Competition has dedicated his victory to his late wife.

Phil West impressed the panel of judges with his serene decorations outside his home in Romney Road on Stockmoor.

On Thursday evening town councillors Marion Denham, Richard Ives and James Barham joined the mayor of North Petherton Alan Bradford to present the trophy to Mr West.

Mr West said he and his wife Gill, who passed away in September, had gradually added to their collection of Christmas decorations over the years.

"We lived in Fleet, Hampshire, before moving here just over two years ago," he said.

"We had purchased the items to make the woodlands scene including deer, a squirrel and an owl, and last year we added the fox and rabbit."

Mr West said they had originally had yellow lights but Gill asked to change them to white to make it feel more Christmassy.

"This year I added the Nutcracker man in the porch who sings eight different carols," he added.

"I have had lots of positive comments, people knocking on the door asking to take photos.

"I like to think when Gill is up there looking down she will be able to see them all - whether you believe that or not I don't know but I certainly do."

Gill passed away in September following complications to a blood condition which came to light when she was receiving chemotherapy for cancer.

Cllr Alan Bradford said: "I think this house stood out and is a worthy winner.

"It was another year with a lot of good entries which made the North Petherton parish feel festive over Christmas and thank you to everyone who took part from North Petherton, Wilstock, Stockmoor, North Newton, Moorland and Fordgate."
