Somerset League Division 2S

Combe St Nicholas 1, Middlezoy Res 2

TOP four side Middlezoy were the visitors to the young stars of Slades Cross.

Combe felt they had something to prove after their poor performance last time out.

Both teams cancelled each other out for the first 20 minutes with neither side creating much to write about, then Combe's pressing created a chance which Dan Anjos just fired over

With the young lads now starting to believe in themselves, Anjos had a shot which the visitors' keeper parried to safety, Middlezoy were restricted to counter-attacks but they should have taken the lead with 10 minutes of the half remaining when the attacker had a free header but put it wide.

Combe carried on pressing and were unlucky not to go in at half-time 1-0 up when Adam Male went through one-on-one on the angle but the keeper came to the visitors' rescue again.

Middlezoy stepped up a gear in the second half and were pressing the home side.

It was Combe who scored the first goal, however, from a quick counter-attack which involved Male and Luke Perry ending with Male scoring his first goal for his new club with a neat near-post finish.

Middlezoy kept pressing and equalised five minutes later when a free header hit the post and Scott Capel reacted first to tap home.

Both sides continued to cancel each other out and, with 20 minutes left, Capel turned sharply and hit a 'worldie' to make it 2-1.

Combe continued to play and press but the visitors saw the game out well.

Overall, it was a much-improved performance from the Combe youngsters who are starting to knit nicely as a team.

On Saturday, Combe travel to Yatton & Cleeve United Reserves.
