SOMERSET has been warned to brace itself for heavy rain, wind and floods this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a 'yellow warning' for rain and wind which is expected between 3am and 3pm on Sunday.

The rain comes amid a nationwide heatwave and yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far - with the mercury hotting 35.1 degrees Celsius in Wisley, Surrey.

But people living in Somerset and the rest of the South West have now been warned to expect disruption on Sunday.

The Met Office website states: "Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer.

"Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges are likely

"It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible.

"Damage to tents or other temporary structures is possible."
