AN OPENING date has been set for a community facility which has been rebuilt after a devastating arson attack.

The Dowlish Wake pavilion at the Lawrence Kellett was destroyed in an arson attack on October 13, 2016, in a crime which no one has yet been convicted for.

After months of fundraising, and grants from South Somerset District Council and the News’ parent company Gannett, the big rebuild is now nearly complete.

Mike Lane, of the Lawrence Kellett Playing Field trust, said: “We are having an opening ceremony for the new pavilion on Sunday, July 22.”

He added that the launch event will be a chance to say thank you to the people who have helped and supported since the fire in October 2016.

Mike added: “It is a remarkable achievement that a small team of volunteers has been able to deliver a brand new pavilion in just 20 months.

“We will be delivering a building that is more than just a sports pavilion, but a legacy for the future and something that the community can enjoy for the next 30 or 40 years.

“It also has many modern features that will benefit the user groups. But in essence it is still a pavilion as it was when Lawrence Kellett donated the land in 1973, and is for sports clubs to use and enjoy.”
