A BUS providing a vital service to Chard citizens has been targeted in a ‘disgusting’ and ‘incredibly stupid’ attack which saw window glass explode across the vehicle’s seats.

A South West Coaches driver was travelling through the town with one passenger when it was pelted with objects from the side of the road.

Fortunately they were sat near the front of the bus as projectiles collided with the side of the bus and one of the windows shattered, showering the inside of the bus with glass.

The incident happened shortly after 8pm on Thursday (March 8) and saw two windows damaged.

Peter Fairey, operations director at South West Coaches, said: “The incident happened at 8.12pm on March 8.

“Our driver was driving along Millfield Road, coming past the end of silver street, heading towards church street.

“We had one lady on the bus at the time, luckily she was sitting forward of where the windows where smashed.

“Not only did it cost us £500 to repair, but it meant the vehicle was off the road until Monday morning.

“Although it was dark and my driver only caught a brief sight of the perpetrators, he believed them to be younger boys approximately 10 to 13-years-old.

“We also had nothing to recover, but believe it was rocks that where thrown.”

The company took to Facebook to share the extent of the damage and appeal for witnesses to the damage.

A spokesman for South West Coaches added: “Unfortunately one of our vehicles had objects thrown towards it along our 96 Service Route in Chard.

“Two windows in our bus were smashed as a result of this. Fortunately no one was hurt. We would appreciate any information anyone has about this.”
