AN Ilton man accused of assaulting a male and using threatening behaviour and then smashed up a vehicle with an axe handle has been ordered to stand trial before Somerset Magistrates.

Barry Wilfie Isaacs, 29, of Chubbards Cross caravan park appeared in the dock facing three alleged offences which were said to have been committed on January 7.

The court was told that the allegations arose following an argument with another man at the site in Ilton and the defendant pleaded guilty to damaging a Vivaro panel van belonging to John Welch at Copse Lane.

However he pleaded not guilty to assaulting Scott Welch by beating him and also denied a charge of using towards Scott Welch threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause him to believe that immediate violence would be used against him.

A further charge of being in a public place while in possession of an offensive weapon, namely a wooden axe handle, was withdrawn by the prosecution.

Following a pre trial review the case was adjourned until March 5 when Isaacs was ordered to return to the court at Yeovil for a trial to take place.

Until then he was released on unconditional bail.
