PARENTS of pupils attending Swanmead Community School in Ilminster are growing increasingly concerned about the amount of traffic and the speed of motorists around the school.
A meeting is set to be held tonight (Tuesday) - as The News went to press - of the school's Transport Parent Forum Group in which to discuss ways of improving the situation.
Headteacher Paul Birbeck said the school was looking at possible travel plans in which to relieve the problems and that he was pleased with the results of a recent questionnaire sent out to parents.
"Local families clearly have strong views about this issue," he said in the school's latest newsletter sent out to parents.
"I would like to thank parents for the tremendous return rate of the parent questionnaire."
More than 80 per cent of parents said the school should discourage the use of cars to reduce congestion around the school in Ditton Street, and that speed bumps and warning signs should be installed outside the school.
They would also be in favour of a pelican crossing outside the school and that safe walking and cycle routes should be more readily available and accessible in the area.
Mr Birbeck also said: "Families whose children use school transport have also raised concerns about the quality of supervision and pick-up points."
Other suggested ideas include widening pavements opposite the school and narrowing the road, plus putting railings up along Ditton Street to improve pedestrian safety.
