THE new Mayor of Chard, Cllr Martin Wale, is looking forward to his year in office and helping to promote the town.

Cllr Wale was elected to the role on Monday night during Chard Town Council's first full meeting since the local elections of earlier this month.

"I will represent Chard to the best of my ability," he said. "I am looking forward to the year ahead immensely. I'm a bit nervous about it, but I shall do my best for the town."

Cllr Wale, 64, a self-employed legal executive, added: "It is quite a commitment to take on, but I'm going to enjoy meeting new people and representing Chard."

He received the Mayoral chain of office from outgoing Mayor, John Malcolm, who has also stepped down as a councillor following his decision not to seek re-election at the last elections.

Mr Malcolm said: "I have enjoyed the opportunity of serving the town and I would like to wish this council a good future and to go on and reach new heights."

Cllr Wale, of Wadeford, was nominated as Mayor and council chairman by Cllr Jean Smith and seconded by Cllr David Hill.

The Mayor's wife, Nanette, presented Barbara Mooney, wife of Mr Malcolm, a bouquet of flowers.

Cllr Wale served as Deputy Mayor last year and stepped-in to represent the town on occasions when Mr Malcolm was ill.

"I know a bit about what the job entails already, but I think on average I could attending up to three or four events a week," he said. "It is going to be a busy time."

Cllr Wale also said he was looking forward to leading a new council with a number of new councillors following the local elections.

"There are six new councillors and they will provide new blood and new ideas - it will be good for the council," he said.

Cllr Cathie Morrison was elected as Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming year.

The first meeting of the new council went smoothly with Cllr Wale at the helm as the various committees were decided. They will now meet separately to electe respective chairmen and their deputies.
