PLANS for a youth club at South Chard Fellowship Hall are due to be discussed at a meeting on Thursday.

The newly elected Tatworth and Forton Parish Council will hear the progress of the plans, which had been supported by the previous council.

It is planned that the club would be held at the hall on Monday nights from 7-9pm.

Council clerk Heather Bryant thinks the club will benefit the youngsters in the area by keeping them active and entertained.

She said: "We are at the stage now where we have applicants interested in becoming youth workers, and youngsters interested in joining."

Youngsters in the area were asked what they would like from a youth club, and as a result the group will have a range of facilities to use including a set of decks and mixers, which will be used through headphones, and a dance mat to encourage them to get active.

Despite the hopes for the club, some residents have expressed their fears about the plans.

Mrs Bryant added: "Hopefully this club will catch the youngsters before they get anti social, the youth workers are trained to talk to them and teach them to be responsible and good citizens.

"It's not going to be open at all hours and will be properly controlled."

Mrs Bryant hopes the committee will carry on the work of the previous council and progress with the scheme, which has already had money invested in it.

One resident, Richard Edge, wrote to the News to express some of his concerns.

He said: "I for one have worked hard to move from an estate and into the country.

"This would change what we on School Lane consider a peaceful area."

Mr Edge thinks the club will bring noise and trouble to people living just meters from the hall's grounds.

He added: "With youth clubs come alcohol, noisy inconsiderate kids, rubbish, drugs and older youths abusing the surrounding areas with cars and foul language.

"I don't mind there being a youth club, but why does this one have to be right a the back of houses."
