The February meeting was held at Bertrose, and the speaker was member Christine Brenton. She gave a presentation with DVD on the medical charity MERLIN.

MERLIN is the only specialist UK charity which responds worldwide with vital health care and medical relief. They respond to natural disasters as well as areas of conflict, disease and health system collapse.

They were in Sri Lanka less than 48 hours after the Tsunami, and were the first international charity to plan co-ordinated relief efforts with the local Ministry of Health.

Donation money is put to good use speedily by MERLIN, and in addition they support and train health workers in 37 countries, as well as reviving the hospital in Liberia, which serves a population of 520,000 in three countries. The vote of thanks was given by Gwen Presland.

The next meeting will be on March 6 at Bertrose at 8pm. The speaker will be Steven Sylvester on life as a Bevin Boy.

Anyone wishing to know more about MERLIN or give support can contact Christine Brenton on 01460-54768.
