THE Somerset Wildlife Trust Ilminster/Chard group recently hosted a talk given by Dr. Jochen Langbein on deer conservation and conflict in Somerset.

It was a very interesting and informative talk on the habits and movement of deer in the West Country, with special reference to the impact and effects of road collisions. He showed very clearly the types of deer in Somerset and the effects of deer grazing on farmland showing evidence that on average only 5% of crops were lost to deer. Some 50,000 deer are killed on the roads each year in the United Kingdom causing human and deer fatalities.

Various ways of improving crossing points for deer were shown. Apparently deer very soon get used to some of the measures taken and make use of them!
