A JAR of udder cream is the weirdest item ever given to the British Red Cross shop in Crewkerne.

The organisation is launching a nationwide stock drive to mark 100 years of its charity shops and commemorate its legacy of support during the First World War.

The Red Cross is looking for good quality clothing, shoes and bric-abrac but sometimes donated items are a little more unusual.

Included in this category is a jar of udder cream given to the Crewkerne shop as part of a batch of items delivered in an old suitcase.

Shop manager Joanna Hampshire said: “I picked it up and looked at it and thought, what on earth is that? “We unscrewed the lid and it actually smelled really nice.

“It caused a lot of hilarity in the shop and we had all the jokes, like pull the udder one.

“We’ve had things like false teeth donated before but the udder cream was definitely the weirdest.”

Other interesting donations include an original first World War flying helmet given to the Torrington Red Cross shop in Devon, which was verified as being genuine and sold for £380.
