MEMBERS of Chard Town Council have agreed to look into putting up a bus shelter in Avishayes Road.
Cllr Cathie Morrison suggested the idea after being approached by residents in her ward who had requested a bus shelter at the stop near the Laurel Centre.
She said: “Many of the people who live in that area are elderly and many have lost the use of personal cars, so rely on public transport.”
The land is owned by Somerset County Council, so town councillors voted to apply for a licence from the authority to put a bus shelter up there.
Town clerk Sarah Robson told the council her initial research into the potential cost of the project suggested a bus shelter with seats and timetable would cost about £5,000, including £500 for requesting a licence from the county council.
She said the figure would not cover maintenance.
Cllr Morrison added: “Most residents said they just want the shelter and don’t mind about having seats – they just want somewhere they can stand. I don’t think they would need a timetable either as many know the times off by heart.”
