EVER-popular Moorcroft, in all its shapes and guises, proved a big draw at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s specialist 20th Century design sale.

Temperatures rocketed in the saleroom, along with prices, as thoughtful auctioneers handed out ice creams for the dogged crowd who had waited for the conclusion of the monthly antiques sale in order to bid on the 20th Century selection.

Collectively, the Moorcroft was bought for £4,725 and found a host of new homes from room buyers, internet interest and phone bidders.

One of the most attractive offerings was a pair of large – 26cm high – baluster vases decorated in the “Poppy” pattern. These went to an online bidder for £320.

An even larger – 26cm high – baluster shaped vase decorated in the “Pansy” design sold for £300.

Well-known craftsmen of the 20th Century era proved compelling for buyers. A stylish Robert “Mouseman” Thompson carved oak stool sold for £480, while a carved oak bowl by the same designer with his signature mouse in the centre of the bowl made £350.

There were a number of entries of Ercol furniture, which all performed well at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton.

Notable prices included a pair of ash framed “Gina” reclining swivel armchairs, which made £400.

A three-piece suite also in the “Gina” design went for £310.

Achieving slightly more were a pair of Ercol light elm and ash model 401 “Butterfly” chairs, which were sold for £320.

The 20th Century Design sale is put together by valuer Simon Rayner, whose thoughts are already turning to January when the next similar sale will be held.

Preparations are now in hand for the next antiques sale which takes place on Thursday, August 1, and will feature a section of West Country Art.
