THE Cricket St Thomas Golf Club Seniors participated in one of their most anticipated competitions this week – the Cyder Cup, which is played over three days in three formats.

The captain and vice-captain pick teams to play in fourballs, foursomes and the singles, which are played on the final day.

Monday’s fourballs resolved nothing, as the 26 teams were locked at 13 points each.

One highlight occurred when Brian Marsh put a 150-yard fairway shot straight into the cup.

Clive Fisk played the shot of the day, though, as his approach shot to the 18th hole was near enough for a birdie, to take the match by one hole.

On Wednesday, 56 players took to the fairways in the foursomes section.

Once again, most games ended in close finishes, as the first 10 games saw each side score five points.

The next three went to the vice-captain’s side but the advantage was lost in the following three, which all went to the captain.

With the scores still level at 8-8, fortunes fluctuated over the final 12 games, and the captain’s team emerged with a 15-13 win on the day.

The final matches, played on Monday, started with the captain having a 28-26 advantage.

Twenty-three singles matches took place in the early morning mist and heavy dew.

The Captain’s team faired the better and took an early lead with the Captain, Roger Stone and partner winning the first game.

This augured well and they soon pulled ahead.

The Vice Captain rallied in the middle, but soon lost ground and capitulated by losing the final games. resulting in a win on the day for the Captain by 28 points to 18, the final result being 56–44.

Congratulations go to three players, Bryan Frost, Bob Rees and Bert Robinson, who managed the maximum six points over the competition.

On Friday, Mike Hone’s trio emerged victors by one point in a three-man bowmaker competition.

Scores: 1. Mike Hone; Peter Spencer-Farr & Jim McDonald - 79 pts; 2. Bob White; Paul Prendergast & Keith Branchflower - 78 pts; 3. Paul Matthews; Tom Downey & John Bonney - 75 pts
