South West 1W
Chard 1st XV 6, Weston 16
(match abandoned, 50 mins)

THIS game was being played on Friday evening under lights before a huge crowd but, with Chard narrowly behind, the floodlights failed and the game had to be abandoned after 50 minutes, writes Glyn Hughes.

Weston were in front at this point due to a breakaway try down the left wing but the match was generally very evenly contested with lowly Chard giving the unbeaten league leaders a good run for their money.

The power failed due to a phase being lost in the distribution board.

Friday night rugby appears to be popular for the spectators and the club will no doubt consider playing other derby matches on a Friday subject to RFU approval.

The game has been re-scheduled and will now take place at Chard on Saturday, February 4.

On Saturday, all the other club games - 2nd XV at Somerton, the 3rds at home to Dorchester and the Colts at Frome - were postponed due to frozen pitches.

The 2nd XV game will probably take place on March 18 and the Colts’ game has been moved to March 25.

On Saturday, the 1st XV entertain Clevedon who are lying second in the league following their 55-0 victory over Kingsbridge.

The 2nd XV are without a match, while the 3rds are at home to Frome.
