Toolstation Western League First Division
Roman Glass St George 0, Chard Town 2

CHARD Town came away from Roman Glass with a well-deserved victory and the three points to take them up to eighth in the table, writes Mike Froom.

On a bitterly cold day they provided some entertaining football and dominated the play with an excellent all-round team performance on the all-weather 3G pitch.

The first half opened with Chard on the attack to provide several good moves. On five minutes a through ball from Stephen Friend found James Boyland whose shot was covered by home keeper Phil Mills.

Further swift moves saw both Boyland and Scott Jakeman with their speed and ball control open up the host’s defence to test the home keeper.

Following a free-kick and corner for Roman Glass, together with a Chard free-kick, the ball was worked down the middle for Bradley Miles to put in a first-time long-range shot which cannoned off the crossbar on 20 minutes.

Chard got their reward some two minutes later when a further good ball from Miles provided Patrick Golden with a free-kick from which he directed the ball high into the top corner of the home net out of the reach of the keeper for the opening goal.

A further effort from Friend on 25 minutes saw him collect the ball in midfield with his shot crashing against the crossbar.

With Chard now on top both Boyland and Jakeman put further pressure on the home defence creating several scoring chances but the score remained with the single goal lead on the break.

The second half opened with Roman Glass winning several corners as they endeavoured to get back into the game but the visitors’ defence held firm while, at the other end, a further good move by Chard into the hosts’ area saw a penalty awarded on 60 minutes.

Luke Jackson converted the spot-kick away from the keeper into the net for the second goal.

Minutes later, Chard’s keeper was in action with a great save over the bar for a corner.

Any further efforts by Roman Glass were cut out by the well-organised Chard defence with keeper Hill dealing with anything on target.

With the two-goal cushion, a shot from Boyland hit the side-netting and a powerful Miles effort was over the bar on 70 minutes.

Jakeman showed good ball control and created several further chances but the score remained at 2-0 for a deserved victory.
