Chard 4, Ashmoor B 1

KNOWING a win would crown them champions, Chard had a lot to play for in this game at home to mid-table Ashmoor.

They started a bit sheepishly with Ashmoor having the majority of the possession in the first few minutes, however, Chard settled in and began to find their rhythm.

They began to pressurise the Ashmoor defence and, after a few chances and short corners, they broke the deadlock.

A pass from Matt Sheahan found Bertie Squire, who beat his marker and squared it for Adam Veitch to fire home.

This lifted Chard and they began to dominate: another good square ball from Squire across the face of goal found Sheahan who swept it in to give them a breathing space.

The next goal was an excellent effort between Veitch and Squire; a perfectly-weighted aerial ball from Veitch was put over the top for Squire to take down and then knock over the advancing Ashmoor keeper.

Chard were playing some great hockey working the ball round the pitch well and getting down the wings to pressurise the Ashmoor D.

The next goal came from a short corner with a trademark Veitch finish through the keeper’s legs.

Ashmoor came out a lot stronger in the second half and caused Chard some problems.

Chard struggled to regain their composure and accurate passing from the first half and Ashmoor pulled a goal back from a counter-attack.

Chard had a few more chances but failed to convert them.

Emotions were running high on both sides and the game began to get somewhat scrappy with the umpires having to speak to a number of players.

With a three-goal lead, Chard never looked in any real danger of losing the game and, when the final whistle blew, the celebrations began.

Overall, a great season for Chard keeping a 100 per cent winning record at home and winning the league.

Despite pitch issues and moving to a new ground, the team has stayed focused and positive.

With all the Chard 1st XI having come through the youth section and 3rd and 2nd teams of the club, it is a real testament to the hard work of everyone involved.
