DRIVING rain and generally foul weather hindered the Seniors at Cricket St Thomas Golf Club as they competed in the February stableford competition.

Of the 30 participants, only 17 managed to complete the course. Emerging wet, but triumphant, John Lyford, playing off a handicap of 28, returned the winning score of 36 points.

Result: 1 John Lyford 36pts; 2 Colin Ireland 33pts; 3 Mike Mosser 31pts.

Better weather on Wednesday saw 42 members attend the three-man Texas Scramble competition.

Only four shots separated the fourteen teams, with no less than six teams recording scores in the 50's, one of which was disqualified for failing to record the requisite number of drives allocated to the individual players.

Roger Stone's team posted an impressive 59.8 to lead for some time before Bob Barrow's side managed one better. However, the spoils went to Mike Light's trio by the smallest of margins.

Result: Mike Light, Bob Hollingworth and Ian Fielder 58.33; 2 Bob Barrow, Mike Hone and John Pearce 58.80; 3 Roger Stone, Brian Anderson and John Lyford 59.80.

The seventh round of the Winter League program took place on Friday in weather that proved to be conducive to some good golf.

Fifteen pairs took to the course, and a fine battle between the three leading teams took place with a single point separating the first three positions.

Competition leaders Alan Chance and Bob White did their chances no harm by returning a score of 38 points, albeit that they only finished in third place.

Contenders Maurice Arnold and Richard Forster also recorded 38 points to finish in second place by virtue of a better back nine.

The day’s winners were Roger Withers and Jerry Stephens who managed one shot better.
