CRICKET St Thomas Seniors held the fourth round of the Winter League last Monday when 15 pairs took to the course.

With conditions quite favourable, some fine scores were recorded, four of which were in excess of 40.

This was even more remarkable as the players were playing off three quarters handicap.

The Heath/Dobson pairing fought a close battle with the Markby/Pearce combination, both finishing on 41 points with the former claiming the best back 9.

However all this was in vain as Bob Hollingsworth’s pair managed a score of two better.

Result: 1 Bob Hollingsworth & Rod Young 43pts, 2 Barry Heath & Trevor Dobson 41pts, 3 Norman Markby & John Pearce 41pts.

Fourteen members who were not involved in the league entered an individual stableford competition.

A closely-fought battle ensued between Des Denning and Stuart Pope – both returning scores of 34 points – with the spoils going to Pope for the best back nine.

Result: 1 Stuart Pope 34pts, 2 Des Denning 34pts, 3 Mike Burt 32pts.

A more light-hearted competition took place on Wednesday when 12 teams played in a three-man yellow ball stableford event.

Five teams managed to lose the yellow ball, which left the field open to win with a modest score.

Only five points separated the first five teams with Alan Chance’s trio emerging victors by two points.

Result: 1 Alan Chance, Mau-rice Arnold & Norman Markby 111pts; 2 Des Denning, Nobby Hodder & Frank Martin 109 pts, 3 Trevor Dobson, Martin Leigh & Mick Aldridge 108pts.

Poor conditions on Friday saw only nine teams play a two man Texas Scramble.

With a ban on trolleys and only 15 holes available, scores varied from excellent to poor.

Several teams finished in the 50s, but an outstanding score from the Davis/Pearce combination of a gross par round saw them win by a margin of a two shots.

Result: 1 Alan Davis & John Pearce 49.25 nett, 2 Maurice Arnold & Mick Aldridge 51.20 nett, 3 Malcolm Roy & Clive Fisk 51.25.

n The club is holding the annual Captains’ drive-in on Saturday at 2pm.
