WINDWHISTLE’S annual Midsummer Madness competition teed off at 5.30am with 18 teams of four taking part and a shotgun start.

The players were blessed with glorious weather.

The club captain’s team of Mike Wilkes (5), Liam Clarke (pro, 0), Will Bennett (Assistant pro, 2) and vice captain Paul Manley (12) romped home by nine shots.

Wilkes and Clarke shot a nett medal 60 while Bennett and Manley scored 45 points in the Stableford.

Taking the Stableford score away from the medal they carded a score of 15.

In second with a score of 24 were Paul Nicholls (4), Shane Scott (7), Mark Crabb (10), and Matthew Crabb (20).

Nicholls and Scott & Shane shot a nett 63 in the medal and the father and son Crabb combination recorded 39 points in the Stableford.

In third place on countback with a score of 25 were last year’s captain, Paul Bennett (6), Andy King (10), Karl Cox (6) and Graham Pike (12).

Windwhistle’s Captain’s Day is being held on Saturday, July 5.

On Wednesday, the Seniors match team entertained the Frome Seniors in what transpired to be a keenly fought contest.

A loss at game one was counter-balanced by a fine win at game two.

The visitors took the lead after game three. Norman Markby & John Pearce fought back to halve game four, but a win at game five levelled the scores before a victory by the visitors in the final game meant a defeat of the home side by 3½–2½.

On Thursday, the Seniors travelled to play Taunton Vale when they excelled with a fine 4-3 win.

With the scores standing at 2-2 after the first four games, wins by Trevor Dobson & Richard Hall and Alan Chance & Stuart Pope ensured the win, despite a loss in the final game.

The Seniors finished the week on Friday with a qualifying individual Stableford competition.

In Division 1, Mike Burt finished in top position with an excellent two under par score of 38 points, closely followed by an equally fine round by Alan Teasedale.

Division 2 players found the conditions harder with nobody scoring better than three over par.

It was, however, a tight finish with only two points separating the top three players.

Results: Division 1 – 1 Mike Burt (38pts), 2 Alan Teasedale (37pts), 3 Maurice Arnold (34pts).

Division 2 – 1 Nobby Hodder (33pts), 2 Bryan Frost (32pts), 3 Gordon Bareham (31pts).
