TAUNTON-BORN wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler earned his 100th England one-day international cap on what turned into an historic day for the visitors against Australia in Melbourne.

The former Somerset star was presented with his landmark cap by James Anderson before the match got underway (see below), and went on to claim a catch behind to dismiss Steve Smith from the bowling of Adil Rashid.

Australia ended up on 304-8 from their 50 overs, a total England - and in particular opener Jason Roy - soon made look inadequate as they set off towards their target at speed.

Despite losing Jonny Bairstow (14) and Alex Hales (4) early, Roy showcased his variety of shots on his way to a record England ODI score of 180 - beating the 171Β made by Hales against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in 2016.

Joe Root made a chanceless unbeaten 91 alongside the opener, the pair adding 221 for the third wicket before Roy eventually fell with the job all but done.

Captain Eoin Morgan fell for just a single, and Buttler was denied a fairytale ending to his milestone match when he top edged Marcus Stonis to fine leg and departed for four.

It was left to Moeen Ali to hit the winning runs as England celebrated their first victory against Australia on this Ashes tour, having been beaten 4-0 in the Test series.

For Buttler, it was a mark of how far he has come since his ODI debut aged 21 against Pakistan in 2012. Now installed as vice-captain and an integral member of the side, the wicketkeeper-batsman will hope there are plenty more landmarks to come on the international stage.

The next ODI is in Brisbane on Friday morning (3.20am UK time).
