Specsavers County Championship Division 1
Day 3
Yorkshire 213 all out v Somerset 268 all out & 234-3

JAMES Hildreth scored 85 not out on the third day of Somerset's match with Yorkshire in Scarborough, but despite the visitors holding a 289-run lead an early finish due to bad light has left their hopes of a win hanging in the balance.

The hosts began the day on 159-7 after Craig Overton's five-fer yesterday, and Somerset captain Lewis Gregory finally got reward after several close calls as he bowled Liam Plunkett for 19 to leave the hosts 180-8.

Tim Groenewald then continued his fine form in the match by dismissing Ben Coad (caught by Jim Allenby) for 15 at 203-9.

And Yorkshire's first innings came to an end when the battling Adil Rashid fell for 49, as Overton made the catch off Gregory, and the home side were all out for 213, giving Somerset a first innings lead of 55 runs.

The visitors made a steady start to their second innings, with Marcus Trescothick and Eddie Byrom building towards 36-0 at lunch and then the 50 partnership, before Trescothick fell for 27 (caught by Adam Lyth off Coad).

Byrom, joined by Tim Rouse, moved onto 40, at which point he was bowled by Harry Brook to leave Somerset 80-2 and with a lead of 135.

Rouse moved up a gear, and new partner Hildreth was quickly into his stride, taking the total to 140-2 at tea.

The pair's half-centuries came up in rapid succession, Hildreth's off 82 balls (with five 4s) and Rouse's from 98 balls (three 4s).

They made it to 191-2, when bad light stopped play for 20 minutes, after which Rouse departed for 69 off 116 balls (bowled by Coad).

Adam Hose came in to partner Hildreth at 224-3 (a lead of 279 runs), but soon the players were off again due to the light, with Hildreth on 85 not out and Hose seven not out.

Play was abandoned for the day shortly before 6.30pm, which was disappointing news for Somerset - they hold a 289-run advantage but look hard pressed to force a first County Championship win of the season on the final day tomorrow.
