Specsavers County Championship
Day 2
Somerset (224 all out) v Yorkshire (202 all out & 127-2)

YORKSHIRE lead Somerset by 105 runs after they wrapped up the hosts' first innings and put together a strong batting performance before bad light ended play.

The home side resumed on 41-3, 161 runs behind Yorkshire’s first innings of 202 all out.

James Hildreth only lasted 10 minutes, as he was trapped lbw by Steven Patterson, gone for 23.

Steve Davies and new man in Lewis Gregory constructed an important 50 partnership, but Davies then went for 35 (still his best batting performance of the season so far), caught behind by Andy Hodd off the bowling of Azeem Rafiq.

Adam Hose passed a fitness test to make his County Championship debut but went for a duck, lbw to Matthew Waite, to leave Somerset 114-6.

Gregory looked to be making a vital stand with Craig Overton, taking the hosts up towards 150.

But the all-rounder, who hit a century at Lord’s, fell to Ryan Sidebottom (who removed Dean Elgar, Tom Abell and Marcus Trescothick yesterday) for 43.

Craig and Jamie Overton saw Somerset to 154-7 at lunch, still 48 runs behind.

The Overtons brought the total up to 173, at which point Jamie went for 19 – trapped lbw by Sidebottom to give the left-armer his fifth wicket of the innings.

Jack Leach made a quick-fire 17 but was then caught behind off Waite at 199-9.

Craig Overton and Dom Bess steered the home side to a batting point and past the target, before Bess was caught by Adam Lythe off Karl Carver for 20, with Overton finishing on 44 not out.

That gave Somerset a first innings lead of 22, which was soon passed by Yorkshire openers Lythe and Alex Lees.

Lyth (10) fell to Bess, trapped lbw, but Lees moved onto 38 before being bowled by Craig Overton.

No more wickets fell, however, as Peter Hanscomb (57no) and captain Gary Ballance (15no) brought the visitors up to 127-2 before bad light brought a premature end to the day's play.
