Specsavers County Championship
Day three
Hampshire (162 all out & 293 all out) beat Somerset (197 all out and 168 all out)

SOMERSET suffered their third County Championship defeat of the season as Mason Crane and Liam Dawson handed them a 90-run loss at home to Hampshire.

Dean Elgar's 60 was a lonely highlight for the hosts, as they tumbled to 168 all out having been set a target of 259 to win.

The hosts resumed play on 39-0, with 220 runs required for victory.

Openers Elgar and Marcus Trescothick looked comfortable enough, until Trescothick was perhaps unfortunate to be adjudged caught behind off the bowling of Dawson for 34.

Somerset then suffered a disastrous five minutes, with captain Tom Abell (5) bowled by Dawson and James Hildreth (2) by Mason Crane, leaving the home side 73-3.

Elgar reached his half-century off 85 balls as Somerset reached 100, but then Steve Davies was trapped lbw by Dawson.

Peter Trego (5) was run out by Reece Topley soon afterwards after a mix-up with Elgar - the South African batsman not running when a single looked very much on - and that meant Somerset were 111-5.

Elgar was bowled for 60, just 15 minutes after that, as Crane delivered a poor ball (long-hop, double-pitching yorker) that nevertheless bamboozled the Somerset batsman.

Lewis Gregory and Craig Overton reached lunch at 129-6, but Overton then went for 10, caught at slip off Crane.

Jack Leach hit a spectacular six that briefly raised hopes of a Somerset miracle as they closed within 100 runs, but he was trapped lbw for Crane to end on 7.

Dawson removed Gregory (25) and Crane dismissed Jamie Overton (2) to end on figures of 4-66 and 5-40, respectively, and Hampshire took the victory by 90 runs.
