ROB Hogg won a bunch sprint for third place in the final round of the Kalas Winter league to claim the overall series title.

This is an outstanding achievement for the 16-year-old McKinley’s 1st Chard Wheeler as he was racing against experienced men competitors.

The race, held at RNAS Merryfield near Ilminster on Sunday, saw Rob’s father Sean finish ninth.

Paul Barratt, in his first race of the year, made an immediate impact with a well timed sprint for fifth place.

The final round of the Mid-Devon CC Springtime pursuit races series took place on Saturday at Halwill Junction in Devon.

Sean Hogg won the prize on the first prime lap and went on to finish strongly in the main bunch, while son Rob secured a very respectable eighth place and ended the series as the top junior rider.

George Fowler was top Wheeler in action, riding really well to take fifth place against a very strong field from all over the south and west of England.

A nasty multi rider crash took some of the shine off the proceedings with one or two broken bones resulting.

The two youth training/coaching sessions at Merryfield on the last two Saturdays have proved very popular with the area’s young cyclists.

Some 18-20 youth riders have been put through their paces by the club coaches in preparation for the start of the youth racing season which starts next Sunday with Somerset RC’s races at Merryfield.

The event is followed on Saturday week after with Wheelers’ own Spring circuit races. For details call Brandon Ellis 01460- 221479 or visit www.1stchardwheelers.org.uk
