ANDY Mapson of McKinlays 1st Chard Wheelers climbed his way to victory in the club’s annual Hill Climb championship.

The competition took place at Yarcombe up the two and a half kilometre climb on some pretty steep gradients.

The Open competition was won by Ottery St Mary’s Jacob Board from the CS Dynamo club and competition was fierce in all categories. All of the top ten riders got under seven minutes and many improved on their previous best times ‘up the hill’. Junior Rob Hogg took second in the club championship and third overall.

The Ladies’ championship went to Martha Beacham whose seven-year-old son Harry was the youngest rider in the competition.

Harry tackled the hill with a determined approach and got under 14 minutes. In the Under-12 category a close battle took place between Joe West and Rowan Ellis with Ellis winning by a narrow margin. Both riders recorded excellent times.

Unfortunately, the planned cyclo-cross races at Holyrood Academy last weekend had to be postponed because of a waterlogged course.

However Cyclo cross training returns to Chardstock School today as well as November 10 and 24. For more details call Brandon Ellis 01460-221479.
