Sidmouth & Ottery C 0, Chard A 3

CHARD A secured their eighth consecutive win against the side bottom in the division, but whose youthful side acquitted themselves well.

After a slightly tentative first few minutes, Chard went ahead from their first foray into the home side’s D as a string of swift short passes cut through Sidmouth’s defence and set up Gareth Eggle to score.

Patience was required before Kyle Wheaton doubled the lead with another piece of individual skill and Chard ended the first half comfortably in control.

Richard Green in goal had not had a save to make and the second half went the same way, with Chard’s defence restricting the home forwards to a handful of off target efforts and one penalty corner, the shot from which also flew wide.

When Chard scored their third with more neat passing putting Harvey Dening through to fire in from an angle, the points were in the bag.

Chard could afford some profligacy in front of goal in the latter stages, Dening getting into good positions in the D on at least three occasions only to shoot wide.

There would have been a fourth had the ball not struck Jason Goddard’s ankle in a goalmouth melee.

Chard have completed the first half of the season with nine wins from 11 fixtures and begin the return list with a home derby against Chard B on Saturday.
