THE heavy rain over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend saw all Ilminster Town matches cancelled yet again, as the wettest late winter in living memory spreads into the spring, writes Andy Fish.

With all local pitches waterlogged, both the home Somerset County League Premier Division match against Bridgwater Town Reserves, scheduled for Saturday, and the Monday Bank Holiday match away against Shirehampton were called off.

Now, with 12 matches still to play, including four home in the first seven days of May, it is going to be a frantic end to the season for the Blues, who are still not assured of avoiding relegation.

Ilminster are 14th in the table on 22 points, three points up on third-bottom Clutton and six points ahead of second-bottom Staplegrove, and the Blues have games in hand on both sides.

If the rain finally ends, Ilminster are are set to travel to Clutton on Saturday, for what will be a vital ‘six-pointer’.

Also on Saturday, Ilminster Reserves will attempt to play their first Macron Devon & Exeter League match since March 24 at home to Halwill 2nds at the Archie Gooch Pavilion, with a 3pm kick-off.

All the Colts and A team matches due to be played over the long bank holiday weekend in the Perry Street & District League were also cancelled, as local football was once again totally decimated by the weather.
