CHARD Town came away from Calne Town with a 2-2 draw on Saturday after a spirited second half performance which nearly produced a winning goal.

Chard started the game in fine style when after only four minutes play a through ball found Sam Clark in the middle of the park.

The Chard hotshot hit a first time strike on the volley from some 25 yards out which gave the home ‘keeper little chance.

However, the lead was short-lived as in the 13th minute Calne were awarded a free kick and David Brigues went through the Chard defence to equalise.

Within two minutes Calne were in the lead with a swift move down the middle and Stuart Windsor shot into the roof of the net out of the reach of Chard keeper Jason Hutchings.

Calne had further chances with some good moves up front throughout the first half but were kept at bay by Chard’s defence.

For their part the visitors did test the home defence on 35 minutes with Ed Butcher through down the left flank but his shot was into the side netting.

Five minutes later Chard lost Louis Gillman with a groin injury to be replaced by Shaun Wells-Burr.

In the second half Chard reshuffled their line up and immediately went on the attack to put pressure on the Calne defence winning several corners and free kicks.

Sam Clark’s shot was just wide on 58 minutes and a further effort from him was over the bar five minutes later.

With the Calne defence just managing to clear their lines from several scoring attempts by Chard most of the play continued in the home half and it was no surprise when the equaliser came on 15 minutes from time with Clark scoring his second goal of the afternoon from close range.

In search of a further goal, chances fell to Oscar Latas and a header just wide of the upright from George Chlo-pecki but Chard could not force the ball home.

The game ended with the Calne forward line having two attempts well covered by Hutchings after a quiet second half for the Chard ‘keeper.
