SOUTH Petherton required a 65th minute penalty to see off visitors Lyme Regis reserves in an evenly-contested Coronation Cup on Saturday.

Jody Bovey was fouled just outside the area, then as he continued his run with the referee applying the advantage law, he was once again impeded and this time the man in black pointed to the penalty spot.

Danny Rendell duly slammed the ball into the net to secure a visit to Combe St Nicholas reserves in the semi-finals.

Combe advanced courtesy of a much easier 6-1 win at Misterton, where Wayne Behan rolled back the years by hitting four goals for the winners.

Tom Shire and Simon Vincent also got their names on the scoresheet while Chas Warren replied for Misterton.

Crewkerne Town were delighted to play their first match of the season on their Henhayes ground after the pitch had finally recovered following the removal of their old clubhouse.

Jamie Spurdle put them ahead inside the opening two minutes against Perry Street and the advantage was doubled by Adam Dawe before Liam Riste completed a 3-0 win against his old side.

Town’s opponents in the penultimate round will be Shepton Beauchamp who beat visitors Beaminster 4-2.

Dan Peach struck twice for the home side while Dan Smith and Aaron Sweet added a goal apiece.

Division One Cup It was also quarter-final day for teams in the Division One Cup where results all went to form.

Most peoples favourites to lift the trophy are Barrington and they recorded the greatest margin of victory in the competition for four years with a 9-2 win at Lyme Bantams.

There were two goals each for Ian Masters, Guy Dare and Andy Whitefield, while Paul Oliver, Mike Towill and Sam Spurway also found the net.

The triumph set up a home tie against Forton Rangers who had to thank Andy Stevenson for the two goals that brought them a narrow 2-1 verdict against Luso-Chard. Tiago Casimiro was on target for the losers.

Winsham United have high hopes of reaching the final after they defeated Pymore 4-2 after extra-time.

Shane Partridge gave United the lead when he headed home following a corner and they looked to have booked their place in the semis when Lee Smolden’s 25-yard drive took a slight deflection off a defender to deceive the keeper and enter the net.

But Pymore were far from finished and forced an extra 30 minutes play with strikes by Arthur Gay and Brandon Scaddings.

With the scores still level midway through the added period, it was left to Winsham’s player/manager Tom Stead to secure victory with two goals in five minutes.

The first came when he ran on to a clever chip over the defence by Ben Smith to score from close range and the second as he received a through ball from Smolden to beat the keeper from 15-yards to take his tally for the season to 12.

John Fowler Cup A Nathan Doey hat-trick helped Dowlish & Donyatt move into the semi-finals as they beat Chard Rangers 6-1.

Matt Vinall, Lee Mears and Chris Lang were the winners’ other marksman, while Bradley Cambridge netted Rangers consolation.

Jordan Brain bagged four goals for Shepton Beauchamp reserves in a 5-1 win at Millwey Rise reserves. Tom Brister was the visitors other scorer with Matt Beechey claiming Millwey’s lone reply.

A Liam Male brace couldn’t save Chard United reserves from a 5-2 reverse at Hawkchurch. Andy Dymond netted three times for the winners whose other goals came from Luke Harding and an opponent.

Premier Division The only fixture in the top flight saw West & Middle Chinnock open up a three point lead at the top of the table after they hit nine goals without reply at bottom team Ilminster Town Colts.

The home side held out for 20 minutes, but in the next four minutes Mark Cawley (2) and Connor Fletcher had given the Chinnocks a commanding lead which was doubled before the interval with further goals by Cawley, Liam Bennett and Liam Samways.

The visitors eased up a little in the second half and completed their scoring through Sandy Veale, Connor Fletcher and George Trott.

Division One Chard United’s hopes of ending their 30th season in the league with promotion to the Premier Division are starting to fade as their losing run was extended to four with a 1-0 defeat against Millwey Rise.

Mark Pike netted the winning goal.

Division Two pacesetters Drimpton hit five goals without reply at Crewkerne Rangers to move six points clear of the chasing pack.

Lee Banks scored twice in the victory that was completed with strikes by Paul Richards, Nick Murphy and Terry Farrell.

Bryan Garrett notched a hat-trick for Thorncombe as they completed the double over Charmouth with a 4-1 win.

Dan Rendell pulled a goal back for the seasiders before Warren Gabbidon completed the winners scoring. Lee Fisher had a hand in all four goals for the winners.

Ilminster Town A remain rooted to the bottom spot after losing 7-1 at Beaminster reserves.

Division Three The match between the reserve sides of Barrington and Thorncombe ended in a 1-1 draw.

Josh Higgins put the Thorns ahead in the 65th minute but his goal was cancelled out by Luke Woodard five minutes later.

With ten minutes left on the clock, Wes King was given the opportunity to earn Barrington all three points when he stepped up to take a penalty, but Andrew Sochon guessed the correct way and saved the spot kick.

Division Four Steve Barnes was on target for Chard United All Stars who suffered their sixth consecutive defeat when they lost 3-1 at leaders Combe B. Graham Cleal scored all three for the home side.

Merriott Rovers made it six wins from six starts by beating Winsham United reserves 6-1.

The winners’ marksmen were Kev Richardson (2), Ash Cooper, Sam Rowswell, Mark Tweedie and Dan Rudge.

A goal each from Craig Studley and Chris Fry brought Drimpton reserves a 2-0 success at home to Crewkerne Rangers reserves.

Danny Baker struck four times for Hinton St George who move up to fourth courtesy of a 5-3 victory over Chard Rangers reserves.

Kev Cavanagh (2) and Rory Helliar netted for the losers, while Hinton’s scoring was completed by manager Ross Jewell.

In the all-Devon match, Niall Waterhouse hit three goals for Uplyme reserves as they extended their sequence of wins to three with a 5-2 defeat of Farway United reserves.
