SOMERSET County Cricket Club are delighted to be able to announce that they have teamed up with Selworthy School.

The partnership will see the Club help to deliver a special four-point educational plan to the students at the school.

Selworthy School is a co-educational special school for children and young people with learning disabilities aged 4-19 and it is hoped that this new partnership will benefit both the students and our players.

The programme was launched recently when Chris Rogers, Ryan Davies and Paul van Meekeren attended the school to help deliver a healthy eating session in which the players and children worked together to cook a healthy lunch and some fabulous desserts.

After a fun and messy session, the vegetable quiches, apple crumble and fairy cakes were very well recieved by the rest of the students, and after lunch the players went on a tour of the school and actively took part in a music lesson and the end of day assembly.

Following the day Chris Rogers said: “It was a really good experience and one that I would like to repeat in the future.

“The staff at the school do an amazing job and the kids are great.

“It was really interesting to see how the school adapts to the needs of every individual and how they go about delivering the curriculum.

“The kids we worked with seemed to enjoy themselves and I think we all took something away from the experience as well.”

Selworthy School Head Teacher Mark Ruffett said: “Over the last few years we have developed a really good releationship with Somerset County Cricket Club.

“The visits from the players are always well received by all the students and this four-pronged initiative will take that to the next level.

“Literacy, numeracy and physical activity are all vital elements of the curriculum and healthy eating is something that all of us should take seriously so we are really pleased that this initiative is underway.

“The students will benefit greatly from this and I believe that the players will take an awful lot of positives away from this too.”

Spencer Bishop, who runs the Club’s Community Engagement Programme, has been working closely with Selworthy School in order to implement this initiative.

“We’ve visited the school on a number of occasions and each time everyone involved has taken a great deal from it,” he said.

“The first session of the programme went really well and we are all looking forward to the next session.

“The staff at Selworthy School do an amazing job and we are delighted to be able to support their outstanding work.”
