PROMISING Somerset youngster George Bartlett has written his name into the record books after a superb start to the Youth Test series for England Under-19s in India.
Bartlett’s 179 is the highest score made by an England Under-19 batsman overseas, beating the 170 made by Nasser Hussain in Sri Lanka in 1987.
The 18-year-old came in at number three with the score on 57/1 and, together with captain Max Holden, put on 221 runs in the next 81 overs – a new record partnership at England Under-19 level.
Bartlett’s knock included 25 fours and three sixes, with the Bridgwater batsman lasting 249 balls before being stumped.
Reflecting on his knock, he said: “It has been a good couple of days for me personally.
“It was good to have the chance to show that I can bat for long period of time and put the Indians under pressure with a big first innings score.”
England eventually declared on 501/5, but India responded well and ended day two on 156/2.
