SOMERSET’S women’s and girls’ squads for 2014 have been named by head coach Caroline Foster following a successful winter training programme.

Somerset Women will be looking for promotion out of Division Two of the County Championship after rain dashed their chances in 2013.

The league features eight other teams who Somerset face in home or away 50-over matches.

The senior squad has been cut to 18 players and the following will be hoping they can secure Division One cricket for 2015 – Anya Shrubsole (captain), Beth Howe, Cassie Coombes, Emma Godman, Fran Wilson, Georgia Adcock (Taunton), Georgia Tulip, Gwyn West, Jackie Hawker, Jenny Withers, Karla Rose (Taunton), Lauren Shrubsole, Lorraine Szczepanski (Taunton), Moira Comfort, Sophia Westbury, Sophie Le Marchand, Sophie Luff (vice-captain) and Zoey Cape (Minehead).

Their campaign began with a double-header of fixtures when Somerset beat Worcestershire at Cleeve CC.

They then lost to Lancashire Clevedon before another defeat at the County Ground at the hands of old rivals Devon.

At Under 13, 15 and 17 level winter training squads and girls who took part in the district training played in the North v South festival in mid-April.

This allowed the girls to get out on grass and implement the skills they had worked on during the winter.

The festival saw some excellent cricket played by all and saw the North just edge out the South.

It was a good opportunity for the girls to showcase their talents and win selection to the summer county squads.
