SOUTH Petherton defeated Shaftesbury in the first round of the Wesseex Friendly League Knock Out Cup last Thursday.

The competition is played by two rinks at home and two away and the club with the highest overall score progressed to the next round.

At home and away, Petherton managed to win on one and lose on one rink but had an overall score of +3 at home and +4 away and so won a closely contested match by seven shots.

Home scores: G Meecham, Fran Hughes, D Hingley and L Symes 19-11; P Harris, Doreen Chater, L Langdon and C Harris 19-24. Away scores: J James, Sue Donovan, B Careford and R Corbet 27-15; Beryl Male, R Mills, P Mottram and R Male 16-24.

On, Shaftesbury came to Petherton in the Wessex Friendly League looking revenge after their defeat in the cup.

In a close fought game that was all equal at half time, the visitors managed to pull ahead on two of the four rinks, leaving Petherton with just two points from the drawn rinks and a loss by eight overall.

Petherton’s final game of the week was a friendly triples game away at Williton. Petherton won on two rinks and lost on two but managed to win by 20 overall.

But on such a beautiful, sunny day, with such friendly company nobody was particularly bothered by the score and Petherton look forward to the return friendly match on June 1.
