AT Cricket St Thomas 42 members of the Senior Section attended the three man ‘waltz’ competition on Monday despite the adverse weather conditions.

The competition is usually decided on the final six holes where all three players must register a score.

A fine team effort by Frank Martin’s side scored 35 points on the back six and in conjunction with 35 scored on the front 12 they proved to be the winners by a clear eight points.

Behind them, a contest developed between teams led by Colin Williams and Robin Flower with the former team securing second place by a single point.

Result: 1 Frank Martin, Bert Robinson & Norman Markby 70 points; 2 Colin Williams, Jerry Stephens & John McOmish 62 points; 3 Robin Flower, Stuart Pope & Richard Forster 61 points.

The foul weather on Wednesday restricted the participants of the Turkey trot medal competition to 30.

It was not surprising that only one member returned a score of par or better, having to combat strong winds and squalling rain.

In Division 1, Bob Barrow triumphed with a score of one over par 71.

Mike Hone was in contention after 15 holes but finished with three double bogies to come in with a disappointing net 72.

He was unlucky to miss out on second place to Norman Markby who also returned a score of net 72.

In Division 2, Robin Flower took the honours with a fine round of one under par, two better than his nearest rival.

Result: Division1 – 1 Bob Barrow 71, 2 Norman Markby 72, 3 Mike Hone 72. Division 2 – 1 Robin Flower 69, 2 Brian Marsh 71, 3 Gordon Bareham 73.

Slightly better weather on Friday saw 39 members competing in a three man ‘waltz’ competition.

Once again the conditions were wet underfoot after the torrential rain the previous day and scoring proved to be far from easy.

In the event, the trio led by John Pearce made light work of the course, scoring a modest 70 points which was sufficient to win by five points.

All the money raised by the competition was donated to Children in Need.

Result: 1 John Pearce, Alan Chance & Edmundo Paolini 70 points; 2 Maurice Arnold, Des Denning & Colin Ireland 65 points; 3 Bob Barrow, Norman Markby & Keith Potter 65 points.
