SOUTH Petherton made it through to the Semi-Finals of the Somerset Junior Cup on Saturday after an excellent 2-0 success at Staplegrove.
Dean Smith gave Petherton the lead in the 20th minute and then Jody Bovey sealed the victory with 12 minutes remaining.
Petherton, who won the cup two years ago, will now face old rivals Freshford United in the final four.
They have been drawn away at Freshford who are the current cup holders and compete in the Trowbridge and District League.
Petherton met Freshford two years ago in the semi-finals and beat them after extra-time before going on to win the cup.
Meanwhile, there was a shock in the Premier Division of the Perry Street League where Lyme Regis, who are odds-on favourites to claim the league title from Petherton, dropped their first points of the campaign.
Having won their opening 13 matches, they were eventually held to a 1-1 draw away at second-placed Beaminster in match number 14. Jason Hawker gave Lyme a 34th minute lead before Beaminster drew level on the stroke of half-time by Josh Baker.
Winsham United cemented their spot in third with a good 3-1 win at Ilminster Town Reserves. Mike Whitefield gave Ilminster a 50th minute lead, but Winsham hit back with goals from Henry Broom, Neil Wilmington and Joe Simmons.
Josh Chadwick hit a brace as Combe St Nicholas Reserves won 5-0 at Merriott Rovers with further goals coming from Jay Stewart, Tom Shire and Stuart Bicknell. It was Combe’s first away win of the campaign.
Ilminster Colts gained a rare win in Division One when they defeated Forton Rangers 3-0 with goals from Taylor Jefferson (two) and Richie Wharton. It was only the Colts’ second success of the season.
Promotion contenders Misterton won 3-1 at Norton Athletic with goals from Dan Peach, Dave Bagg and Jason Crabb. Rob Dash scored a 25-yarder for Norton. Honours were even at Netherbury where they drew 1-1 with Barrington.
Misterton Reserves won 2-0 at Hinton St George in Division Two with goals from Dan Dominguez and Daryl Gray.
Combe B suffered a setback in their promotion aspirations in Division Four with a 6-2 defeat at Barrington Reserves. Steve Chadwick and Graham Cleal scored for Combe, but Barrington saw Steve Park on fire with four, while the others came from Wes King and Tomahiro Nakayama.
Thorncombe Reserves also went goal crazy when they beat Uplyme Reserves 6-1. Wayne Stanton netted four with others from James Tunnicliffe and Chris Marshall, while Chris Matthews netted for Uplyme.
There were plenty of cup games at the weekend. Millwey Rise won the Devon Intermediate Cup East Area Final with a 5-0 success at Feniton; Terry Emmett hit four with Ben Turner claiming the other.
Will Aplin scored an 80th minute consolation as Shepton Beauchamp went out 4-1 at SRL All Saints in the Quarter-Final of the Somerset Intermediate Cup.
Late goals from Phil Denslow and Nick Bachrach sealed a 3-1 win for Crewkerne Rangers at Charmouth in the Second Round of the Tommy Tabberer Cup. Paul Miners had given Charmouth the lead, but Crewkerene drew level through Scott Isaac.
Dowlish and Donyatt gained a 4-3 success over Pymore. Ben Charlton (two), Lee Mears and Matt Vinall were on target for D&D, while Tim Hussey (two) and Phil Ackerman scored for Pymore.
Crewkerne Reserves won 6-2 at South Petherton Reserves. Dave John (two), Aaron Hodges, Adam Swinnerton, Dean Norris and Aaron Sweet netted for Crewkerne, while Mark Padfield and Danny Rogers scored for Pethy who had Lee Caines sent off after just 12 minutes.
Two own goals and a third-minute effort from Gavin Fowler gave Uplyme a 3-0 success at Thorncombe.
Harry Boddington and George Partridge hit two apiece as Combe A won 7-1 at Forton Rangers Reserves in the Second Round of the Bill Bailey Cup. Ross Bicknell, Will Jacobs and Darren Contreras also scored for Combe. Tom Melhuish scored for Forton.
Luso-Chard went down to a 3-1 defeat at home to Drimpton. Ricardo Silva scored for Luso, but on target for Drimpton were Adam Tanner, Chris Rowswell and Lloyd Studley. Drimpton had top scorer Adam Chant sent-off in the 20th minute for pushing a player.
Ben Pitman netted a brace as Shepton Beauchamp won 4-3 against Waytown Hounds. Sam Hodgkinson and George Jeffries were both on target for Shepton, while Matt Read hit a hat-trick including two penalties in the final six minutes.
Millwey Rise Reserves ran out 4-3 winners on penalties in their match with West and Middle Chinnock Reserves which had finished 2-2 after extra-time. Chinnock were leading 2-0 at half-time with goals from Mark Cawley and Danny Rudge, but Milwey hit back through Bradley Miller and an 88th minute equaliser from Jess Langdon.
The Reg Eglon Cup Final will be played between Ilmisnter Town A and Farway United Reserves. Ilminster beat Chard United Reserves 5-1 with Luke Lazenby hitting a hat-trick and Kev Crouch (two). Steve Scriven scored for Chard, while keeper Wayne Lewis pulled off some great saves to keep the score in single figures.
Josh Gamble, Darren Cooke and Steve Craft all scored as Farway beat Hawkchurch Reserves 3-1 in the other semi-final. Steve Harding got Hawkchurch’s goal from the penalty spot.
