SOMERSET have received a boost ahead of the Vitality Blast finals day with the news that Sussex star Rashid Khan will not be available to feature in the semi-final.

Afghan spin sensation Rashid, 19, is currently ranked as the top T20 bowler in the world and has had a productive spell with the Sharks in this year's competition.

He has taken 17 wickets at 14.35 and finished with an economy rate of just 6.59 - he also claimed 3-29 against Somerset in the group match between the two sides at Hove, which Somerset won by three wickets.

However, he is unable to feature in the showpiece event at Edgbaston on September 15 due to his participation in this year's Asia Cup in the UAE - Afghanistan's first match comes against Sri Lanka on September 17.

A statement on the Sussex website confirming Rashid is to return to the club next season reads: "In his eleven appearances, Rashid took 17 wickets at an average of 14.35 and finished with an economy rate of just 6.59 to help Sussex to a first quarter-final since 2015.

"The side went on to win that match against Durham Jets last Friday, and qualify for Finals Day at Edgbaston on Saturday 15th September. Rashid will not be returning for the occasion."

Rashid said: “I was really pleased to see the team qualify for the quarter finals and then to the Finals Day. I wish them the very best of luck; I hope they do well and win the title for Sussex. Come on Sharks!”

The spinner's absence is a blow to Sussex, though they are far from a one-man team. Their attack also features England international Chris Jordan and the supremely talented Jofra Archer, while Danny Briggs is capable of causing problems with spin of his own.

The semi-final between Sussex Sharks and Somerset will be the second of the day, beginning at 2.30pm.
