FORMER Holyrood Academy and Richard Huish College student Kitty Wells will be playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League in the Ukraine this August, with her current team, Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Cardiff Met are the current Welsh Premier League champions, so will be representing Wales in the qualifying round of the competition.
The qualifying matches take place as one-venue mini-tournaments on August 7, 10 and 13 in a host country, with 10 group winners and the two best runners-up progressing to the main competition.
The draw last Friday in Nyon, Switzerland, pitted Cardiff Met against Kharkiv (Ukraine also being the hosts), Olimpia Cluj (Romania) and Birkirkara (Malta).
Cardiff Met are the only UK university team, male or female, to have ever played in the UEFA European competition.
The team consists of current students and university alumni, with Wells joining the team last August when she started her BA in education studies at the university and becoming the main striker for the season in all competitions.
During the season she also represented Welsh Universities against Scotland.
Before moving to Cardiff, she also played for Bishop Lydeard Ladies, moving to them at 16 years old from the Somerset Centre of Excellence, having begun her football journey at nine years old, playing for Avishayes Combe FC.
She is also grateful to Phoenix Engineering in Chard, as her sponsor during the competition.
