Specsavers County Championship - Day 1
Lancashire v Somerset
 321-5

MARCUS Trescothick showed that he remains a batsman to be reckoned with, scoring his 65th First-Class century as Somerset enjoyed a promising opening day’s play against Lancashire.

George Bartlett then added a century of his own, as the visitors passed 300.

The away side made two changes to their line-up from the win over Yorkshire, with Jack Leach and Paul van Meekeren coming in for Dom Bess and Josh Davey.

They won the toss at Old Trafford and elected to bat first on what looked a good pitch for run-scoring.

Trescothick, having made a slow start to the season, was anything but sluggish here, as he tore into Tom Bailey's bowling (the Lancashire man conceding 29 runs off his opening three overs).

Trescothick and Matt Renshaw raced to 55 off 13 overs, but there was to be no third Somerset century for the Australian, as he fell for 21, caught by Jordan Clark at deep square leg after skying a delivery from Bailey.

That brought Bartlett to the crease, and the 20-year-old settled in well alongside Trescothick, who reached 54no at lunch, with Somerset 113-1.

Bartlett brought up his first Somerset half-century off 97 balls as the batsmen continued to make hay.

Trescothick reached 95 before appearing to roll his ankle as he changed direction going for another run, but battled through the pain barrier to reach his 100 off 137 balls (with 15 fours).

He was out off the next delivery, edging Liam Livingstone behind to Dane Vilas, and an X-ray later showed he had a broken metatarsal.

Bartlett and James Hildreth took Somerset past 200 to put a batting point on the board, though Hildreth departed for just five (caught by Clark off Joe Mennie).

Bartlett and Tom Abell took their side to 228-3 at tea, after which Bartlett completed his maiden century (off 189 balls, with 12 fours and a six).

He eventually fell for 110, as Livingstone took a fine catch off the bowling of Mennie.

Steve Davies went for 15 (c Vilas b Clark) but Abell remained unbeaten on 48, with Somerset 321-5.
