SOMERSET’S search for an overseas player for the 2018 season is nearing an end, with new director of cricket Andy Hurry confirming the club are “very, very close” to making a signing.

Speaking at his first press conference since being announced as Matthew Maynard’s replacement – along with head coach Jason Kerr – Hurry provided an update on the situation.

“We are very, very close [to signing an overseas player],” he said.

“We’ve been through a robust process and made sure we’re identifying the best fit for our needs going forward. There are one or two more things to sort out before we can announce it.”

Somerset found it difficult on the overseas front last season, particularly towards the latter stages after the departure of South African opener Dean Elgar.

Fakhar Zaman was announced as a signing, with the move later falling through, and Somerset embarked on their survival bid without an overseas player.

Hurry went on to confirm there are no plans to bring in any domestic signings “at this stage” and outlined his belief that Somerset can compete on all fronts in the coming campaign.

“We are all of the belief that we’ve got the depth and quality within the squad not only to compete, but to win silverware across all formats of the game," he said.

"We are all on the same page, and ultimately we are all here to win trophies for Somerset.

“It was a very easy decision for me [to return]. I’ve got a lot of history with the club – Somerset County Cricket Club is in my DNA and I’m very passionate about the club.

“The fundamental reason [for returning] is about the people – the membership, supporters and playing and coaching staff. You can see the fire in the players’ eyes and I believe we can be successful here.

“There are infrastructure changes and a few changes to the personnel, as well as a new Chief Executive.

“There have been some astute signings in the past few years – Steve Davies added a wealth of experience and quality last season –  and it has also been really interesting to come back into the environment and realise what hasn’t changed.

“The values of the club are still at the forefront of everyone’s mind. The determination of the players is evident already, and it’s great to see those values are still so strong.”
