TWENTY-THREE pairs of senior golfers entered the first round of the Winter League competition at Cricket St Thomas on Monday.

The benign conditions aided good scores as the majority of teams returned par or sub par rounds.

Way out in front were Chris Gingell and partner, while no fewer than three pairs shared third place.

Result (Round 1) - 1 Chris Gingell & James Siabi 45 points; 2 Roger Stone & Chris Housham, 41; 3 Brian Marsh & Mike King, 39.

A beautiful day on Wednesday attracted 39 players in a Bowmaker competition.

Stuart Pope led his team to the winning post with 77 points.

Teams led by Andy Beale and Alan Chance battled it out for runner-up slot, both returning 75.

Result - 1 Stuart Pope; Chris Basterfield & Mike Hone 77; 2 Andy Beale; Mark Saunders & Phil Dewar, 75; 3 Alan Chance; Dave Muggridge & Bert Robinson, 75.

On Friday, a 15-hole Texas scramble was held.

In a very tight finish, with only 0.83 of a shot separating the first three positions, Alan Davis’ trio took first place with a score of 50.

Result - 1 Alan Davis; Steve Holt & Richard Hall, 50; 2 Bill Hilson; Jim McDonald & Ian Housham 50.33; 3 Bob Rees; Eric Williams & John Wandless, 50.88.

The Seniors then held their AGM in which the new captain, Barrie Heath, was elected.

Outgoing captain Roger Stone was thanked for his efforts during what was a very satisfying year.

He presented a cheque for £5,250 to Louise Trott, regional fundraiser for Diabetes UK, marking an end of a successful fundraising year.
