Friendly match
Chard 25, Wellington 5

A CHARD squad made up of both 1st and 2nd XV players welcomed Wellington to Essex Close for their sole pre-season game.

Wellington scored in the first 20 minutes but an excellent Chard defence ensured this was the visitors’ only score.

An encouraging performance by Chard saw skipper Ryan Helliar, Nick Hyslop, Doug Herbert and Scott Johnson all score.

Chard 1st XV’s first league game is at home to Truro on September 2 (ko 3pm), while the 2nds travel to Wiveliscombe first up.

Friendly match
Chard 3rd XV 17, Wyvern 64

THERE was a good turnout for the 3rds’ pre-season game against Wyvern, also played on the renovated main pitch.

Ash Dart made his debut and was outstanding.

Wyvern were dominant from the start, showing why they play two leagues above, but Chard didn’t give up and with ball in hand they often looked as good as the Somerset 1 team.

Brian Sugar, Mike Farthing and Jock McKerrow scored for Chard.

This was a landmark game for the Carnell family, as Martin and his sons Rhys and Noah played their first senior game together.

Chard 3rd XV start with a home game against Cheddar Valley on September 16.

CHARD RFC hosted an RFU 'Inner Warrior' event last Friday night, inviting ladies who were curious about playing rugby to join them in a training event at the club, which was organised by Liz George and Tanya Poole.

The 40 ladies who attended received goodie bags and lots of encouragement, especially the 14 trying rugby for the very first time.

Training was followed by a barbecue, with awards for Jade Mowlem, Michelle Lawrence and Kirsty Carlos for outstanding effort.

Organiser Liz George said the event was a fantastic success and was grateful for support of Paul Cox and the RFU, the sponsors, coaches and helpers.

Chard Ladies will be making their debut in the Somerset Cup this season, and their first friendly is at the Yeovil Festival on September 3.

Training is held at the clubhouse on Mondays from 7pm; for more information, contact Liz on 07764 857514.
