WEPL Somerset Division
North Perrott 1st XI 215-6 beat Staplegrove 1st XI 189 by 28 runs

NORTH Perrott kept up their winning run, Stacy Hawes taking four wickets as they beat hosts Staplegrove by 28 runs.

Perrott won the toss and chose to bat first, reaching 57 before George Retter (29) was caught by Ben Howe off Ian Bishop.

Captain Gordon Whorlow and Troy Johnson guided the visitors up to 100, before Johnson departed for 25.

When Whorlow went for 39, Perrott were 136-3, but Jake Symes (31) and Nick Taylor (27 off 23 balls) took the total up to 200, before Craig Jones’ run-a-ball 12 not out saw the away side post 215-6 off their 50 overs.

The pick of the Staplegrove bowlers were Ian Masters (3-42) and Thomas Pantling (2-49).

The hosts’ reply never really got started, as Hawes reduced them to 5-1 and 10-2 by removing Joseph Pantling and Ben Howe, both for ducks.

Opener Thomas Pantling was plugging away, but lost partners at regular intervals as Hawes also did for Masters (9) and Brendan Craggs (0).

Whorlow then bowled Aaron Nurcombe (4), putting Staplegrove in serious peril at 66-5.

Harry Graydon joined Pantling in the middle and took the hosts past the 100-mark, but Pantling’s departure for 61 (trapped lbw by Alex Eckland) sparked a collapse.

His wicket fell at 129-6, and Eckland then saw off Graydon (29), before Johnson took two quick-fire scalps – Bishop and William Parkman, both for ducks – to leave Staplegrove 135-9.

Matthew Dimond (30) and Ryan Cleverly (23no) were never likely to score the runs needed to overhaul Perrott, although they did last until the 49th over, when Josh Giddings stumped Dimond off Eckland to bring the match to a close.

Hawes finished with figures of 4-26, Eckland 3-38 and Johnson 2-30 for the victors.

Perrott collected 19 points to Staplegrove’s six, and they are 12 points ahead of Weston-super-Mare at the top of the WEPL Somerset Division.

The pace-setters are on the road again this Saturday, seeking their sixth consecutive victory away to North Petherton (1pm start).

Pethy are fourth in the standings, but lost at struggling Wellington last weekend, handing the hosts their first win of the season.
